Interesting, I came to post something on this blog this week, and found it inoperative.
Investigation revealed that all the data for it and my other blog had disappeared off the server. Now, either I’ve been hacked or my hosting provider has deleted my data for some reason.
Unfortunately I didn’t have a backup of everything from the last couple of years (I could go back to 2011) and when I checked with the host they wanted to charge to restore my data.
So, lesson learned, I need to make sure I keep better backups of everything on my site locally.
Thankfully, the Wayback Machine had copies of all my blogs so I was able to recover them.
But all this begs the question, is the cloud really safe and the way to go for everything? If my hosting provider can lose my blog and not have a simple restore process, is it the same for the likes of Azure, Skydrive, Dropbox etc. And what about if your mail goes missing from the cloud. Can it be easily restored?
I was coming round to the idea of putting everything in the cloud…but this incident has changed my mind. There is still a place for local copies of things.
